Amko Fence & Steel helps military get its wings back after Hurricane Katrina displaces aviation support facility?
HAMMOND, La. — Like it did to many other facilities in Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Katrina dealt a devastating blow to military air operations based in New Orleans in August 2005 – so much so that, following Katrina, the operations were moved to Hammond, La., across Lake Pontchartrain, northwest of New Orleans. Last February, about four-and-a-half years after Katrina’s wrath displaced military air operations in New Orleans, the National Guard ceremonially opened its new Army Aviation Center in Hammond.
Playing a major role in securing the new facility was Amko Fence & Steel Co., a 35-year-old contracting firm headquartered in nearby Gonzales, La. Thousands of lineal feet of chain link fence was installed by Amko at the facility, along with numerous gates and control systems.
For a job of this size and scope, things went very smoothly due to close cooperation between the contractor, the military and the materials suppliers, according to Amko owner and project manager Michael LeBon.
